19thC. Pennsylvania Decorated
Carved Box 1823.
Superb early 19thC.
paint-decorated and chip carved Pennsylvania chest or box. Original blue
paint with excellent wear and surface. The front, sides, and back are
chip carved with a wonderful pinwheel decoration. The lid is signed
B.E.D. and dated 1823 in fabulous salmon paint. Painted sunflowers
border the lid in colors of mustard, salmon and oyster. Original wrought
iron lock and hinges. Entire chest is constructed of rosehead nails and
wooden pegs. Minor wood loss to back right corner of lid, above one of
the tulip hinges; a portion of the lid was repaired or is a very
early replacement (split in the middle of the date). A rare piece of
early Americana.
