1831 Portrait Mary Jane Gates
Brattleboro, Vermont ,
Painted at 19 years of age , the portrait is unsigned but obviously the
work of a skilled artist. Portrayed with her hair parted, jet jewelry
and a black dress with exposed shoulders. Period gold gilt and gesso
frame. Original untouched condition, no holes or tears, crackleure
throughout, and a few small chips of paint missing at the bottom center
which seem to coincide with a water stain on the reverse. Frame is in
excellent condition, with a few small areas of gesso loss here and
there. There is an accompanying period piece of paper - written in ink
is the name of Miss Gates along with her birthdate in 1812 and her date
of death in 1900.
Measurement: 21.75 x 25.5 sight;
28.75" x 33" framed.
