C.1900 Yokut Basket.
Wonderful large flared Yokut
(YOKOTCH) Indian cooking basket, Central California. The Yokut Indians
lived in the foothills above Sanger around Squawvalley, Wondervally, and
Dunlap CA. Yokut women used these baskets for cooking acorn meal - the
meal and water would be mixed together and heated rocks from the fire
would be dropped into the mixture, thus cooking the acorn meal. The
stitching in these baskets were tight enough to keep the water in the
basket. Local plants were used in the making of the baskets, sedgegrass
root was used for buff color, brakenfern for black accents of the
design, and redbud used for red accents. To help with the stitching,
weavers used an awl carved out of splitdeer bone. The colorful designs
were rich in imagery and meaning to the Indians. Many of the designs
were patterns found in nature such as deerfeet, deer tracks,
rattlesnake, and human figures.
