1814 Dated Forged Flax Comb or
Hatchel , fabulous testament to the skill of
the blacksmith. Individual "combs" are inserted into the base , which
was then spiked into the wooden floor or tree stump whereby the flax
plant was combed through to create fibers ready to weave into linen.
This comb is artistically decorated with the initials J.(F?) C. K. W.,
dated 1814., with scrolled arrows on each end. The reverse is decorated
across the length of the base with one long scrolled arrow. Two forged
iron hanging hooks at outer combs. A heavy piece at 8 lbs. Excellent
condition - only the tiniest bit of rust on some combs. Found in
Ohio.
Measurement: 14 3/4" W x 11 1/2" H
x 1" thick.
